Growing up in Fiji, my grandfather would feed anyone in need. If he came across anyone hungry, he would welcome them in his home to enjoy a warm meal. Indeed, that was the standing order of my grandfather’s home.
My family migrated to the United States in 1961 from the Fiji Islands. We grew up in San Francisco, California. My dad (Baba) followed in the same footsteps as my grandfather. He would often take those who were hungry and homeless to restaurants to feed them. My father was the most generous and giving man.
After high school, I was drafted into the United States Army at 19 years-old. I proudly served in the Army for two years in the Army Corp of Engineers as a Sergeant in the Vietnam War. Upon my honorable discharge from the Army in 1970, I began working as a telecommunication technician at the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company.
In 1972, I went back to Fiji to marry my beautiful wife. We have been blessed with a son and two daughters, seven amazing grandchildren, and last but not least, two wonderful sons-in-law—both of whom are also veterans.
